P-pump swap ?
No answer in the 24 valve section so I'll ask again here.
Looking to buy a 98 crew cab 4x4 1 ton dually but I want a 12 valve and would prefer a stick instead of a auto tranny. Obviously they are hard to find. I heard the 99-2002 had the VP pump which are apparently junk or dont make good power like the p-pumps. Is this true and if so how hard would it be to switch to a p-pump in a 99-2002 model? How much cost? Not looking to drag race the truck but i want good power for pulling a 34 ft triaxle gooseneck from time to time with some heavy loads and I know the 12 valves make good power the cheapest, or so I've been told. Any advice ? Only have about 14,000 to spend on a truck.

14,000 should get you a nice 12 valve easily. If you can't find one with a 5spd, get one with an automatic and look into doing a NV4500 swap. I think thats going to be a bit easier/cheaper than converting a 24v to a p-pump. While the 24v VP44 trucks are by no means "junk", you do have to worry about the VP44 failing... its a far more common occurrence than a P7100 failing on a 12 valve.
Check the Craigslist for you're state if you haven't already.

A few people have done it, makes for an awesome engine.
The VP can make good power but requires electronics that will cost you while many P pump power mods are free. The VP isn't as reliable as the P but can last longer as long as you install a fuel pressure gauge and don't let the VP starve for fuel. Beware of the VP engine's with the 53 block that is prone to cracking.
Conversion's not cheap and a lot of work. Thing I know for sure is you must replace the cam. A P-pump alone without a core can be over $1000, vendor may give you something for the VP though.
Piers Diesel has done a lot of these conversions and may even have a kit.

Replacing the cam isn't necessary. It does need to be pulled to swap the timing case housing though. A decent used ppump can be found for $1000 or less, and if you VP hasn't failed yet you can sell it to recoup some of the cost.

Magnum Salvage:
The Members here are giving you some good advice and links.
I would add that you are right, the 1998.5-2002 Dodge CTD Pickups do have the VP-44 Fuel Pumps. I owned a 2002 Dodge CTD 24 valve and can tell you it was by far THE WORST Dodge CTD Pickup I have ever owned Magnum!
But, with that being said, you can do the conversion from a VP-44 to a P-7100 Pump. IMHO, the P-7100 Pumps are some of the BEST fuel pumps that were ever put on the Dodge CTD Pickups! They are very TOUGH well-built, easy to work on pumps which last a very long time. On the conversion, you can do the conversion yourself by buying the right parts you need including a P-7100 Fuel Pump. I can tell you that my shop, Scheid Diesel has done many of those conversions and can help you with the parts list/cost if you are interested. Their number is 1-800-669-1934. Their Effingham, Illinois shop has a 1996 Dodge CTD 2WD 5-speed, Dually that has a 24 valve engine with the P-Pump Conversion in it and it drives very, very well. If you are ever in that area, contact General Manager Mike Wood and I am sure he would let you drive that truck.
Good luck Magnum!

First, I'm assuming you are talking about a quad cab with the half back doors, and not a crew cab with the full back doors, because they did not make a crew cab until 2003.
With that said I would recommend taking your time and finding a nice 12v. Doing a p-pump swap would be pretty expensive, and you would be money ahead to put that money into a 12v to get all the steering fixed and do anything else you may want to do to it.
Good Luck
Cory

The 24v engines are by no means junk, but they do have their downsides. But don't believe that they will leave you stranded constantly. 12v's will fail as well. For just towing, converting a 24v to a p-pump isn't worth it in my eyes. Its a fair amount of money, and if its purely for the reliability factor, then you can buy a lot of VP's for the money. If you want it for big numbers, high rpms, or for just something different, then by all means.
