Options for rebuilding/replacing turbo
Hey fellas,
Been a long time since Ive had a Cummins (2007), and its good to be back! Been dying for another since I sold my last one!!
Picked up my truck today (see sig) , runs and drives pretty good. All stock though and sure feels like it.
Upon my shakedown Ive found that the turbo shaft has a fair amount of front to back play. From what Ive read that's not to good. Please correct me if I'm wrong. My best guess without a dial indicator is .030"-.050"
So, what are my options? I don't want to rebuild it myself because I don't have the appropriate area to do so, nor do i feel comfortable doing it, being that a failure results in the motor consuming the failed parts that make it past the IC.
So, how much does a shop normally charge for a rebuild? ( I can take it off )
Or how about a cartridge replacement? ( I do feel comfortable putting this in)
Or should I just go new?
I'm on a budget right now and need to do this as cheap as feasible. I don't want junk either and can appreciate the cost of a new turbo and the reliability it provides.
Also, with the shaft play I'm seeing would it be a real bad idea to continue driving it? I pulled on the shaft while rotating the comp wheel and could not feel it contacting the housing.
Thanks in advance,
Jake

Yea, us 12 valve guys are becoming dinosaurs.
I'm not too concerned about front to rear play, so long as you have noted, it doesn't contact anything. I would be far more concerned about up and down play.
Do you have any other reason why you think it needs rebuilt?
BAE racing systems has HX35 rebuilt center sections for 329 bucks, might be others out there cheaper.

They are pretty easy to rebuild, hardest part for me was the little baby inner snap rings for the bushings. Make sure you mark the compressor wheel's spot to the shaft so it goes back balanced. Holset rebuild kit was under $100.
Fwiw in and out play is not good and it will be able to contact the housing soon if it hasn't already.

My understanding is little left to right wiggle is fine as that will smooth out with 50 PSI of oil when running.
The in and out is bad though.

Thanks for the responses fellas. In and out play is not to exceed .006" so mine was definitely bad. I ended up getting a used one locally that had zero play in and out , normal side to side play for $250. It wasn't fun getting it off, but still would rather do it that way than pull the manifold with it on. All is well and she is singing again! :-)
Thanks
PS: My local turbo shop wanted $575 to rebuild it !
