Oil idiot light comes on

My idiot light just started coming the other day after the truck warms up and I come to a stop, the oil pressure gauge is reads 1 needle width below 40psi. I was wondering if the idiot light and the gauge are on the same sending unit or are they on different sending unit. Or is there something else going on?

It is a fairly common problem........you need to replace the oil pressure sensor for aobut $35 I think. It is on the driver's side of the engine and requires a special socket to remove it. Even a brand new one gave me problems and had to be replaced in less than a month.

So does the idiot light and gauge use the same sending unit.

I had the same issue on my 98 the gauge would bounce all over the place I replaced it with one from my local part store it was like $12 it worked for five minutes then I went to Cummings and got one for like $48 and it works fine they look almost identical with the exception that one has a small a embossed in it and the other has a b.

My gauge doesn't bounce all over the place it stay real steady. It's just that the idiot light come on when the gauge reads about 39psi.

Does anyone know what pressure the idiot light is suppose to come.

The gauge is not accurate, it's just a dummy gauge. Replace the sensor and all should be fine. Or just learn to live with the annoying warning chime.

I had to replace the sending unit in mine as well. I managed to do it with a crescent wrench i think. Not verry difficult at all.

If the gauge is not accurate which one do I believe, the gauge or the idiot light?

The gauge and dummy light work together, if a low enough voltage is supplied by the sensor the gauge shows low and the dummy light comes on. Mine chimes and it can be real annoying especially in stop & go traffic. Do a search on oil pressure and you will come up with lots of reading. Good luck!

What is your idle at when mine slipped to about 600 RPM it would be ok until i came to a stop and the light would come on.

The gauge is not accurate, it's just a dummy gauge.
That was an "improvement" for '98 and all 24 valves.
Pre '98 have a real pressure gauge.

That's what mine does, if I put it neutral the light goes off. At idle, in gear it's 1 mark below 1000 rmp so I probably just bump the idle up a tad. I just would of thought that the idiot light would come on at a lower pressure than 39psi.
