NV4500 3rd gear grind

Well....I got the dreaded 3rd gear grind last 4 days...It's not bad at all...But its there...When I pulled this trans apart,3 years ago, all the syscos and gears where perfect..But there is one thing I never replaced was the hydraulic clutch assembly...I did notice...I was having a problem getting it into gear the past 6 months..As I know...the hydraulics have never been replaced and truck has 240K miles..No leaks and oil level ok...Hoping it just worn out..

Lets see if I wasted my money...[laugh]

I've been having the 3rd gear grind too.. This is a rebuilt tranny but its got about 100,000 km on it now. I have Amsoil in it but now going to put some of the OEM oil in it and see if it helps. I hope its not the syncros..

Can you float the gears smoother than with the clutch? I found that when my 3rd gear synchros went in the dually. Time for a G56 upgrade.

I was reading somewhere...A guy had only 300 miles on his rebuilt trans...And the 3rd gear started to grind again...:(

Maybe our problem Jason...We baby our trucks to much...[laugh]..

I have only a 10% chance it's the hydraulic clutch assembly..But should of upgraded to the HD back when I installed the new SB....6 years ago..

Darn...re-fresh this old farm boys memory...What do you mean "float the gears"?????..[roll]

Clutchless shifting.

[laugh][laugh].....Thanks buddy....Use to do that on a old 1956 Mercury grain truck...

Going to give that a try on the 95...If it works...Then the syscos have had their day....:(

I guess if that's the case...I better learn how to overhaul one of these NV4500

Diesel Dave2 05-22-2013 10:15 PM

Wow....Maybe all these years...the clutchs I installed....I never did these type of measurements...Maybe been doing it wrong all this time...

3rd gear has been a bit more notchy then any others since I put mine in 3? years ago, especially when cold. I've been just pushing the clutch in right before pushing the shifter forward (kinda floating it) and it goes right in, same with 4-5 shift.

Got my new clutch hydraulics today...Be a couple of days before I will install...Lets see what this thing will fix...[laugh]

I watched his nv5600 video before we did my friends clutch on his 6 speed, taking the couple extra hours and making sure the install goes perfect sure has made for one sweet shifting truck.

Huh.. Wonder if mine has been screwed since the get go as far as the clearances.

Jason....Did you upgrade your hydraulics to the HD southbend??

When I installed my SB clutch about 5 years ago....I left the stock hydraulics..

I just got the SB hydraulics installed yesterday...Haven't driven the truck yet...to see if this upgrade is of any benefit from stock replacement..

Lil Dog 05-30-2013 04:20 PM

OEM hydraulics, but there was a spacer washer in there for the fork pivot that "could be installed if required" for proper clearance. Maybe thats the issue..

Your OEM hydraulics should be fine...Just from my run today... the HD hydraulics maybe needed for the dual disk...For our single disk...Not much difference between the OEM and HD..

I really didn't think it would fix the 3rd gear grind...If you roll into the gears it's ok...Do any type of speed shift from 2nd to 3rd..The grind will still happen...On my truck anyways...I never noticed this until a week ago, because I never shifted my truck like a sports car..And they are not intended for that...But should be able to do a quick shift without a grind...

So....I think we have to look at these measurements...I found on the internet....That the NV4500 3rd gear grind is a common problem..And I don't think it's from abuse...Because I know how your drive truck...I drive mine the same way...
