Exclamation Is this normal for Dodge Transmissions?

Hello everyone appreciate the help in advance.

I have a buddy who bought a 1997 1 ton dually diesel. He called this morning while pulling an empty 16ft cattle trailer home, with the O/D OFF, that it was running 2500-2800 RPMS basicly screaming down the road.

So i drove over to take it for a ride, This is what i noticed with the O/D ON... it shifts fine BUT around 45-50 you have to back off the throtle a bit to allow it to shift, then when it does shift it seems to shift the last 2 gears one right after another pretty quickly.

With the O/D OFF it runs about 2800 rpms doing 50 mph. I have no idea if the rear end has been geared down or what but even so it seems something wrong.

I am not a Dodge man so if this is normal let me know, or if you suspect something wrong let me know. again thanks for the help in advance.

From: In Oroville, Ca., same house for past 46 yrs!
sounds like my 48RE when it shifts to O.D. and then almost immediately locks up the converter. Kinda like 2 shifts.

mine used to be like that- it was as you said- the OD engaging then the converter locking up right away. Alot of the shift and lockup points are determined by rpm, speed...meaning the load on the trans and the line pressure.
Had it rebuilt and tuned so it shifts a little different now.

BTW- fwiw my 96 will not hit 2800rpm- gov kicks in by 2500- top speed somewhere around 74mph in OD locked up.

Okay sounds good thank for the input. We hauled some cattle with it today and it did alright I guess, Once we got turned on the on ramp i just floored it and it wasn't so bad. I have to admit it just seems to be very gutless, but once it shifts into over drive it really takes off. Maybe as your it just needs some tuning up then it will be alright. Thank you all for you feedback much appreciated.
