noisy 4x4

when i engage the 4x4 in my truck it works, but it is really loud, it sounds like i have huge mudd tires on or somthing, and you can kind of feel it on your feet, i don't know if i just need to change fluid or what?

check fluid levels, and look for metal filings (not likely). check u-joints.

grab onto the front driveshaft and give it a tug back and forth. you will be able to see play in u-joints (if bad) or sometimes the big nut 1 1/8" on the yoke or flange may be loose. it was on mine, this causes noise.
