no o/d problem

hello, i have a 97 12v 4x4 auto, and recently o/d has quit. o/d started being very delayed and has finally quit. I talked to local trans shop and they told me probably was o/d solenoid i replaced both tcc and o/d solenoid but didnt fix. I borrowed a snap-on scanner and monitored it and everything seems to be reading ok -tps,trans temp, speed sensor, and new switches. there was no trash in the pan when I dropped it and once in a great while it will shift in o/d and it works--please help???

Could have blown the piston seal. It is possible to just remove the o/d unit from the trans, a special tool and a press is required to compress the direct clutch spring (terminology might not be %100 on that) to disassemble. Also might be a good idea to make sure the connector on the top of the trans rings out to the solenoid. I don't have the pin layout in front of me, but it's out there. Test for continuity from the outside of trans to inside, while moving the plug around a bit. Cleaning /inspecting the valve body would be in my plan as well. Good luck, I know screaming down the highway in 3rd isn't fun....

Just for kicks, where are you located? I have the tools to do it, free to borrow if needed, the o/d compression and shaft alignment tool. I don't have an auto anymore either, so I have a manual for it too.

Mine went on and off awhile ago then the speedo quit and I lost OD altogether,No exactly what you guys are going through. Dont know if it will help, but an easy fix for Me was to tap into the solinoid with a toggle switch,Power should always be present, the sol. is switched by making a ground. I verified 12V's at the connector and tapped the ground running a new line to a toggle and from the toggle to Neg Batt cable, works like a charm, also no annoying TC lockup.I know some of you may be cringing, but to me the lock/un lock/lock/slip/unlock was really annoying, and seriously I dont notice any loss in MPG. Am I doing any damage to the trans? Time will tell, but I doubt it. Check your OD Switch on the Dash,I've heard of those causing trouble in all sorts of Dodge trucks.

if you are running this rig with NO lock up and tow heavy you are asking for trouble. the cooler return from the converter is the lube oil. towing can super heat the oil to the point of turning it to steam and a loss of lube to the OD planet. seen it a lot in the GM 700r4 with no lock up.

on your 95 you have to drop the valvebody and its on the passenger side of the trans. 3 wires going to it.
