New Tranny or more troubleshooting on my 89 W250?
Third gear went gone today in my 89 W250. I had accelerated quickly to get around a bozo and as I came to the next stop light, my engine seemed to stop firing in one of my cylinders, within 30 seconds it was smooth again. I went and parked for an errand and when I proceeded to drive again, 3rd gear was gone. Just air, no engagement when the clutch is released. It would then also stay in 4th even after feeling like it was in neutral.
The engine deal is probably separate, as I've been working out some water in fuel problems since a bunch of snow melted into my tank after loosing the fuel cap...oops.
I bought the truck out in Washington in October 2012.
The tranny has been sticky inbetween 4th and 5th and would often jam in 5th or in that region of stick use.
I had already been planning a front seal replacement on the transfer case as well as tranny mounts and I am pretty sure my main seal is leaking pretty bad, as I loose oil pressure at normal operating temp and there is an obvious drip and smoke from that area once up to temp.
I got a quote for a Reman + stock clutch and misc replacement parts + main seal and labor for $2300.
Its either do it all or mess with the tranny from the top (cut a hatch for access in floor)and live with a leaky main seal. Thats not ideal to me.
The truck has either 127K or 227K. Its only got the 99999 odo.
I am a busy welder guy and dont have a good place to do this work myself overtime.
Any thoughts anyone?
Thanks

typically tranny shift issues are in the top with the shift rails and detents. Any idea of how much oil is in it? think it should be one quart over full. This is the getrag tranny?
