I just had my pump rebuilt and a new cam/lifters/pushrods installed after a failure.. so far my fuel economy looks like its going to remain at 10mpg city.
Wish I knew what you guys were doing to get those big numbers. Not sure what to try next. Might go back down on the thicker head gasket when I upgrade to a hamilton head.

It seems a little strange to me but my MPG's have slowly gone up (4:10 gears, auto 2WD) - not sure why really, my driving habits haven't changed, but I'm not complaining. When it was brand new I was getting between 20-21 on the highway cruising at about 2K RPM and now with 283K miles later I'm getting 23-24 - go figure.

355 gears and 4" exhaust. in town mixed 19 all the time. 26 and 27 highway at 70 . I tow a 10.5 fiver golden falcon and have go 15.7 at mostly 55 mph. With the mods my truck pulls my fiver the way it should have been built to do. It was a pain towing stock even on small hills. now were I used to drop 20+ mph, now I loose 3 or 4 on cruse on the same hills. Finally got it dialed in for some power.

I get 16 in town and 16.5 towing a 60 sedan delivery on a car trailer at 70mph. Never driven on the freeway unloaded if you can believe that

exactly my point!!!!!
i pull a 6x10 cargo full of tools all day every day about 5k lbs im guessing...
i have 3.54 rear automatic rebuilt last year less than 10k miles.
s&b cold air box, home made #10 fuel plate, timing at 16.5*,new valve adjustment, new screen in preheater, and preheater delete, all on 285/75/r16.
these mods all in last 2 years..ive owned truck from day 1.. mods make more power but did not affect mpg..take that back before timing i got 8-9 mpg.. now 9.5-10.5...
i dont drive the highway much but 2 weeks ago i did thats when i got 10.5..
so all my driving is in town stop and go..
checked my speedo by going mile marker to mile marker right on the money.
unless i cant add...drove 273 miles on 7/8 tank took 28.78 gallons to fill = 9.5 the last fill was 346 miles to a full tank and 33 gallons to fill so i know tank is empty..does anyone have advice..no its not right foot, at $4 gallon she stays under 2k rpm.

are you pulling lots of steep grades? When I towed the shop In-closed trailer to Oregon I was getting a little over 10MPG but in the way back I did a lot better. That is a small trailer to be 5000 lbs but I guess tools are heavy. Our in-closed is abnormally tall and I bring alot of merchandise (maybe 2000lbs just in merch) plus a small show truck (but no drive train yet) so if the trailer weighs 2500 plus merch, plus car, I figure it was around 6000 lbs. Here's the wild part, when I tow a 3600 lbs car (60 sedan delivery) to LA and back on an open car trailer, I get 16+. So most of that loss was hills and wind drag
Also, when I tow, almost none of the miles are stop and go, its all just Hwy99 at 65MPH
Wish I could help you more

The sender works independently of the pumps. If you are figuring out your MPG by gallons and odometer, the sender will not effect your outcome

not steep grades no but i do live in colorado springs so its not flat..was just guessing on trailer weigth i thought it was 3klbs empty so maybe not 5klbs more like 4klbs? i dont know, 6x12 (type o from last post) wells cargo vnose single axel anyways i thought it was a lite trailer compared to some guys pullin ***** and still gettin better mpgs..
what about a bad injecter? or worn turbo fins? cant belive it would be one of those cuz this truck was new when i got it and it still got 9 mpg..this truck wasnt allways hooked to trailer...only last 5 years and trailer made no differance to mpgs..

well with one axle you are fairly limited to how much it should weigh loaded.
Do you have gauges? if so what is your peak boost, egt's and do you have a fuel pressure gauge?

i have gauges on tranny, egts, and boost..needing to get fuel presure.
egt around 800* will peak at 1250-1300* but as soon as i take foot off down to 800 ish...boost will peak at 32psi but cruzin 50 mph 1400 rpm less than 5psi. now you got me curious as to what trailer weighs, toung sticker says gross 5klbs.
just had emissions done the guy said one of the cleanist he's done in awhile so i dont think its dumpin fuel allso no black smoke..

Gross is what the total of the trailer and the max load combined would be

This is just like every thread about mpg's. Very wide spread numbers. I think some are figuring with hard numbers, some are using the overhead. My 96 model is pretty consistent at 19.5 in mostly rural highway driving, 60-63 mph @~1800 rpm. Seen 20 one time. I run 285's on it, and my numbers are not compensating for that. Just straight off the fuel pump and odometer. My daughter said she got 24 in hers once running around 70 mph. My old truck drops pretty quick when I start getting that fast.
