Power Steering Upgrade - questions
Hey guys, I'm trying to get away from the piggyback saginaw power steering pump and vacuum pump by going to a medium duty hydraulic pump that mounts in the same location. I've rebuilt my vacuum pump 3 times (truck has 350K miles on it) and even though it's not a big deal, it's aggrevating to have to do. Plus I've never been very impressed with the saginaw pump on my truck. I don't know if it's the pressure or flow rate - but the medium duty pump should have more of both.
So right now, I've acquired the pump. It's off a 6bt in a school bus - the pump is a luk and it has the adapter for the cummins engine. The tag on the pump appears to have come off many miles ago, but from what I've read, it seems it would be a 2150psig @ 4.5gpm pump. I am going to have the pressure adjusted to 1600psig. Will also require a remote reservoir and some other minor tweaks, along with an electric vacuum pump (already have that too).
When I received the pump from ebay, there was a little play in the bearing on the adapter. I separated the pump from the adapter and found that the bearing is a tapered roller bearing - not a ball bearing. Does this sound right, or should there be no play in the bearing?
Any other tips from those that have done this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Waylan

I got shims from PSC steering and used a gauge inline to set the pressure around 1600 at full lock idling. Pump has worked great and is wat should have come on our trucks from the factory. I've got about 373k miles on the truck with no issues. Would do it again if I had another 5.9.
