Kinda at the cross roads with my truck, fix it, or sell it. Cannot complain its been good to me, just not running right, and moneys a problem. 98 12 valve, wont start cold without throttle pressure, idles low for 5 minutes, then picks up some, stalls at lights, stop signs, surges when warm, while sitting in gear. truck has 167.000 did a tst fuel plate, about 5 years ago. only thing I've changes is the one short elbowed fuel line.cant see any other leaks, I've done some searching here, and really unsure whats wrong with it, hate to spend alot on things that may not be broken.

genos garage is good for the pump, but try removing the heater section of the pre filter mine was leaking around the electric plug, and had similar problems.

Best price I could find was the local Cummins parts dealer. I couldn't believe it either...

I chased a similar problem with my truck for a while, plus missing above 3200rpms. I finally got tired of it and spent the money for the ADII to delete everything factory from the fuel system except for the fuel tank. Truck runs as it should now.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? Over flow valve maybe?

First thing to do after a visual inspection is to hook up a fuel pressure gauge and see where the pressure's at. A fuel pressure reading can tell you a lot of things that are NOT the problem, and help tremendously to narrow down what IS the problem..... Remember to use a needle valve for the gauge hookup or you'll damage the gauge before you can say "what the...!?!?"

First things first, what is your idle RPM cold? If it isn't at least 700, you need to reset it.

You problem sure sounds like too low of an idle on an automatic trans CTD..

The second thing I would do is dose it really hard for a couple of tanks with Power Service.

I keep my idle on my audomatic 12v at 500, really helps on the downhills and it doesnt creep forward as much when in gear. Mine runs amazingly perfect.

I received my parts from geno's amd installed it yesterday, the 8" rubber hose was weathered, and when I squeezed it, had 3" long cracks in it. The heater looked ok, but when I removed the electrical plug diesel came out so I removed it, changed the pre filter. Installed the new lift pump, and gaskets. The lift pump says geniune cummins on the box, but says made in china on the pump, a scary thought considering how much of a pain it is to get to on the truck, I wonder how long it will last?, stock one says carter on it.Changed the fuel filter, the one that came is a smaller od, but fits ok top side, never had one that small before, part number seems right. Increased the idle, which was a chore, seems the stocker is worn down in one spot, not sure if I can get a new one, and I broke one of the return springs, and would like to know if thats a dodge only part?.Service from geno's was great, they emailed me the ship numbers, and such. I started the truck this am, cranked right up, no throttle pressure required. Thanks to all for the info, and hope the truck runs another 13 years before I have to do this job again. Mike

A generic spring from the hardware store or autoparts will work.
Or you can buy one from the dealer.
Last I time I bought one it was $7.

If you haven't replaced the pump yet it will be 100 times easier if you to toss the stock pump bolts and replace with a pair of 8mm x 30mm x 1.25 pitch studs with nuts.
