Lost power steering pump

Started my truck at 0 below and ideled it into my garage, hour later tried to move truck now no steering or brakes. Got a steering fluid on my floor. I know I should have warmed it up. You think my power steering pump is out?

Probably not, time to change the fluid.

Mine moans and groans as well, I'm right behind you in the need to get good fluid in.

Typically the fluid will get contaminated over time and then when very cold, will foam out the cap along with moaning and not generally moving anything.

Easiest is to get a cheap turkey baster, and use it to suck out as much fluid as you can, refill, run it, then repeat for 4 or 5 times. eventually you get out most of the bad stuff.

I have been looking for synthetic PS fluid but can't find it around here, they say it works better.

Amsoil synthetic atf. Best stuff I've found for power steering fluid. Only stuff I use in anything that requires either ps fluid or atf for the steering system.

I don't know much, but what I know, I stand behind

Thanks Pind, coming from where you do, that recommendation is huge.

The funny thing is I always used ATF for PS fluid growing up and never had an issue...... I switched to PS because the experts said to....

Guess I had better order a couple of quarts and get out the turkey baster.

Once again, thanks!

Just pull the return hose off at the connection from the hydro boost (metal tube near fuse panel). Slip a hose on the end of the tube and stick in a container. With the engine running, fill the steering reservoir and it'll pump into your container.

I suggested it only because my NAPA has a Royal Purple display right at the door when you walk in.

Ah, better quicker easier way!
Any idea how much fluid I should have standing by to do this? I'm thinking I have KDP job coming up on the 97 (after I get 96 trans issues resolved) and can do PS fluid in 97 at same time.

I've been doing the turkey-baster method for years. I'll try this one next time. Thanks for the tip.

Depends on how nasty it is. A quart or two of Wally World oil should work just fine.
