lost 5th gear

well i was driving into work today and it sounded like a pushed the clutch in. no pops or grinding. just no fith gear. it shift like it is there and i have all the other gears. what happened??? i was fixing to pull the tranny to put in a new clutch, so i guess this happened at a good time. but i am still wondering about it. even thinking about just buying a brand new tranny from the dodge house to be done with it. i have a spare tranny right now in a parts truck that is a 96 with 116k on it. should i just get a new one or chuck in the spare. the truck will be at around 400 hp in the next couple of weeks and i don't want to do this again. mike

My old mans truck(96 3500, 200,000) had something similar happen to it except it got stuck in 5th,twice [yuk]. It ended up being the little shift fork had gotten worn and wouldnt shift out of 5th. We replaced it and no more problems except we had to drive the truck 200 miles home in 5th :'( so needless to say the clutch burned up >:(. Dont know if this helped but thought I would try ;).
Wheels

You do not want to but one from Dodge- you can get a new one cheaper at Blumenthals in OKC. If it is the 5th gear and everthing else is ok you can get an updated shaft, gear and nut from Blumenthals also. They can do the work for you or just sell you the parts.

Call Blumenthals @ 1-888-236-4800. Speak to Monty and tell him Karl Darby in NC told you to call him.

Hey Mike,

Man you are gonna be just like me ;D I shelled three 5th gears before I got it all patched up right.

Since your in Ft Worth, talk to Standard Transmission in Ft Worth 817 625-7109. They have the same fully splined mainshaft and update gear, nut stuff. They are top quality folks with great prices. I had mine repaired over two years ago by them and it is still holding strong with daily 500 plus HP blast through it, dont tell them this part though :o Mike Patton from Standard said they have yet to loose a single 5th gear update yet, "knock on wood"

Just take 'em yours and get it rebuilt or exchange, whatever is cheaper. I think mine full boat with everything was less than you might think.
They can also resurface that flywheel perfectly and correctly for your new clutch!

Don~

BTW, nothing against Blumenthals at all, just Standard Trans is much closer to him

What ever you do, do not waste your time and money with a "nut only fix." Do it right and replace the shaft with the improved version with the full length splines. Otherwise, you will be right back here in about 30,000 miles with another problem of stuck or sticking 5th gear.

They had parts for my 4500 when no one else but dealers ($$$$$) had them - and reasonable. Also had parts for my t-case and Dana 80. Friendly people, and seemed knowledgable.
Best bet buying an updated 4500, as I can tell you from experience tearing down a 4500 is NOT fun. You could repair 5th while still in truck, just to buy some more time (assuming the mainshaft isn't ruined). May last, may not. Lost 5th on mine before there was updated shaft available. New nut solved my 5th problem, but still had to tear it down later for bearings.
Good luck,
-Scott

I agree with Shire. Been there and done that. Lost 5th gear twice. Now have a fully splined mainshaft and other new parts.
John
