Question KDP tap question

I’m tying to tell if the KDP on my truck has been tapped. If it has would the tap be located behind the fan hub bracket?

FD here is a pretty good link with alot of info.

You have to make sure yours is fixed. If you did not know it was a problem you wouldnt worry about it. Now that you know about the dreaded KDP its difficult to start it up, cause you will always wonder is it going to happen today ?

I have the same issue. Truck bought (well) used from a dealership with unknown mods. Is there an easy way to tell if the KDP has been taken care of or just plan on tearing into it and check?
Thanks!

If it was tabbed from inside the timing cover, there is no way to tell. If it was fixed using the dowel pin jig method, you will see the spot where a hole was drilled thru the housing and a threaded bolt was inserted in front of the dowel to prevent it from backing out. You will see the bolt head from outside of the housing to the right of the water pump.

Fschiola's link shows where to look for the jig bolt location. Otherwise, the cover has got to come off to tell for sure. Kevin

I think it's very safe to say, and maybe others will chime in, that if you bought your truck from a lot or from someone who didn't tell you that the pin was contained that it probably isn't. The people who even know about the kdp problem are the same ones who work on their trucks themselves, visit boards like this one, are proud of their rig and know they're better off not selling it to a dealer.

If I didn't know the history I'd buy the kit from TST that has everything you need to do the tab then tear into it.

Thanks Guys,

I don't see where it has been tapped. You would think with 240,000 miles on it if it were going to come out it would have already. As Dusty said though I get the hebie gebies every time I crank her up now. It’s hard to work on one in a RV park, kind of like working on one on the side of the road. We don’t have all of our tools with us, sure miss the shop at home. I guess I’ll have to find someone around here that will do it. I found a Cummins Atlantic Inc in Kenly NC will call them and see what they say. I can get the kit and have them do it.

By the way pappyman has a great site on the KDP fix. http://www.phantomcycle.com/kdpfix.html

Mileage makes no difference, I've seen the pin come out at 400k.
Don't get all that worried, my guess is that way less than 1% will ever come out.
Problem is if it does it will be a grand pain. It's just cheap insurance.

If you are on the East coast anywhere close to PA, you might want to get a hold of Wannadiesel. He's on a Crusade and kills them for the fun of it.

Heck Wannadiesel hates them so much he might even come to you. As some folks say in the Inner-city cant hurt to "AXE im" he might need an excuse to vacation.

Are there any kdp jigs floating around the missouri area? I keep forgetting about the dow pin till I read these threads. And I was at a shop yesterday and they were putting another short block in a truck! Seems the truck was at the dealer getting a small repair and the dow pin fell out while they were test driving it. Guy kept driving it and destroyed the turbo and shortblock. Then they said it wasn't there fault!!Talk about bad luck!Kind of sent a cold chill down my back when I saw it. You know the old saying "There but for the grace of god goes I" Me thinks I'll fix mine and my friends trucks too. I would really feel bad if one of there trucks got it and I didn't tell them about it first.

I think I'd agree with that, Infidel. I'm actually the fourth owner of this thing! Kinda surprised me cuz it runs great. Other than some steering issues I've since had fixed, there doesn't appear to be anything mechanically wrong with the truck. It has been bombed to a degree. Doing the kdp myself is a bit too adventurous for me but would enjoy some experienced help. Always want to learn more so I can do more. Just have to find a good Cummins mechanic close by...

TDR used to have loaner jigs that would get mailed around but after Harold- rvhvnfn@juno.com -208 850-8749 started selling jigs for cheaper than round trip postage the practice about died.
Harold has a standard kit consisting of the KDP jig, a 5/16 drill bit w/drill guide and stop collar.w/directions for $29.95 including S&H.
He also sells fan wrenchs, not sure of the price.
