After the fan is loose move it towards the drivers side and lift up with two of the blades straddling the oil fill, now rotate the fan, it will come right out.

With the huge bracket hanging off the fan, I could not physically see another way for it to come out.
I just cut my losses, and pulled the hose. I might have taken me another hour to figure out how to snake it out, and thats something I didnt have.

I dont see why any tab would be bad, unless you made it out of cardboard.
The tst tab that I put on my truck was thick, like 1/8" almost. I have heard of people using sawzall blades for tabs, which are really thin. But I dont think there is enough pressure against the tab to make a difference.
