KDP issue
I bought a KDP kit from TST and it says I have to use a engine baring tool to remove the engine balancer, or an impact wrech. I have niether, so do I have other options to keep the engine from turning? Can I just leave the tranny in gear and turn off the engine? I have pretty basic tools, but I should be able to complete the KDP job if I can figure out how to get the balancer off.

I am getting ready to tab my KDP. I am planning on putting it in fifth and setting the parking brake. I also have an impact but on crankshaft bolts I like to remove them by hand. I get nervous about bolts in the crank.

Ive got an auto though, I think it might work differently.

Its not a big deal to just put it in gear and take them out by hand

I just used a piece of steel stock I had and wedged it between the notch in the damper and the ground so it couldn't keep rotating, and unbolted the bolts with a long handle ratchet and socket. (i had a auto when I did the KDP).

You can't puit it in 5th and set the brake with an auto.
There are plenty of other methods here to try. ANother is one I use when changing timing belts on small cars. Honda, Toyota, etc. torque the bolt that holds the harmonic balancer to the crankshaft to 150 ft-lbs. I use a Rigid strap wrench to hold the balancer when I remove the bolt. I have successfully removed dozens of such bolts with my strap wrench. Personally I like a #5. http://www.ridgid.com/Tools/Strap-Wrench |
I just did my KDP yesterday. I just used a breaker bar and a few swift pulls and all 4 bolts on the balancer broke loose. Engine compression let me torque the balancer bolts back to 90 ft lbs. Pin was out about 1/4". The tab in my kit was wimpy so I made my own.

Here's what I did:
Wedged a piece of angle iron into one of the notches in the balancer. Worked great! http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y23...y/P1010024.jpg |
