Im in trouble, I stripped the band adjusting screw 47rh
 

So sorry to bother all, but I need some advise quick. I have a 1994 dodge 2500, 47rh tranny when I was adjusting my reverse band (inside the pan), I was using a 12 sided socket and stripped the hex head, I bought the right socket, and no go, it was too stripped. I might be able to hammer on a 6mm socket to undo the screw but can I remove the screw and replace it or will something worse happen if I take it all the way out. if not can I leave the socket on the screw head permenantly? any body know what to do? i hammed a 6mm on, i thought it was close to the 72footpounds that it needed before backing off , I didnt want to strip it any worse so I just backed it off 2...socket is still on, its on there good...buttoned it back up and now NO second gear...before I adjusted it, it was really loose. the little arm was waggling and had a 1/3 inch of play, does that sound loose to anybody?

72 foot lbs? 6mm socket???? I bet it was 72 inch lbs (6 ft lbs) for the correct torque, I'm not an auto trans guy but your specs can't be right on that small of a thread

holy crap your right !!!, thanks so much for catching that...tomorrow morning I will pull the pan and fix that...do you think I killed the tranny?

1/3 of an inch...? try backing it off 1-7/8 to 2 turns from the 72 INCH POUNDS of tight.

Set that play to 5/16 and all is good.

above link is right, i just use a pair of vice grips on that inner square adjuster and hit it up hand tight. then back of the correct ammount of turns.

Exactly. Done lots like that, and if you can't get the socket on there, that 5/16" will get it closer to perfect than it probably ever was from the factory.

I want to thank everyone who responded, I posted this problem on several boards but you folks had the most helpful imput. I pulled the pan off today and redid the hole operation according to the genos garage paper. Yesterday I hammered a 6mm socket over the stripped adjustment screw and its holding..it also wont come off, so i hope it will be ok. I put everything back together and second gear is back!!! I did not give it a good test drive (just around the parking lot) but tomorrow Ill give it a decent drive. I could only get lucas atf I hope it works out. I also added a drain plug in the pan (should have done that a long time ago)...I cant believe nobody has ever done the "72 ft/lbs- 72 in/lbs before....I will post tomorrow with how it all turned out but I just want youall to know that this board rules for helping idiots like me get back on the road

I bet a lot of people have and something broke or stripped out.
Most probably wouldn't admit it.

The rear band has nothing to do with 2nd gear.
The rear band is applied in reverse and manual 1st only.

Front band is 2nd gear only.

what controls the 3rd and 4th? This is a RH trans btw

3/4, or D/OD, is controlled electronically by the computer. The gearing is all in the tailhousing.

Hi all, everything turned out all right. I adjusted the bands and everything seems to be ok.

Scot pa - how did I loose 2nd when I cranked down the "in the pan" band, Is it possible when I loosend it up I loosend it way up ?

as of now 1st and 2nd shift clean, 3rd seems a little soft, and overdrive kicks in at different speeds 50-65 (I think its the TPS) the lockup was flaky until I added a lockup switch. after I adjust the TV cable its time to change the fuel plate etc.
