Idles fine stumbles above 1000rpm
I recently had the front end of my 98 apart replacing the gasket behind the timing case, all went well, but now I fire it up and it idles beautifully but if I rev it up to 1000rpm or higher it just spits and sputters and smokes like crazy, did I bugger up the timing???
Negative, I learned about the pump pun while searching why my timing was out, I guess my question is, I've got a 15 mile drive to town to get someone to do timing, what's the worst that will happen if I drive it there, and do I get them to advance my timing while I'm at it
Here's my latest update, the truck is supposed t go in for timing tomorrow, so I fired it up and was going to take it to town, let it warm up for a bit, drove to the end of the driveway and runs like a champ, I took it for an 8 mile drive ran great for the first 6 miles and the last two it started stumbling and smoking.... My question now is, I don't think it is timing as it ran just like it did before this issue, it smokes very heavy white and blue seems like a fuel problem, can anyone else chime in on this, I got the truck to a small stumble while idling and cracked all the injector lines but couldn't really hear any cylinder making it worse or better

Ok, but in my mind the truck ran perfectly fine for 6 miles, then it started stuttering, the pump is mechanical why would it run good for that long then bugger up, shouldn't it of been out of whack from the get go
There is achance that you are getting air into the fuel system. That being said I would still get the truck timed. I would go to 15.5 on the timing instead of the stock 13 degrees. You will get better milage and more power. If it still does it after that I would check my fuel system for an air leak. The injector pump is held to the pump gear by a friction fit with a tapered shaft. They have been known to slip and this will change the timing. It is possible if the gear is not torqued correctly that it could move multiple times like andvancing from a hard deceleration and retarding from a hard acceleration .
Depends, if you didn't get the shaft and bore PERFECTLY clean, they like to slip, sometimes in the first mile, sometimes a week later........ Have seen many over the years.
