Hx 40 questions

Does the hx 40 have a 4’’ exhaust outlet connection?
If so, would a 4’’ down pipe connect directly to it?
Can my stock hx 35 be modified to connect to a 4’’ down pipe so that I could avoid the 3 1/2’’ bottle neck of the hx 35 outlet? It seems like that would help lower my EGTs.
Thanks in advance for any help, Marv

HX40 has a 4" flange stock. You can purchase a new wastegate housing for your HX35 to allow a true 4" connection, will be a couple hundred $ though.
FWIW, an HE351CW from 04.5-07 CR cummins also have a 4" connection along with a 60mm compressor. Need to have a operational wastegate as it has a 9cm turbine housing.

Thanks for the reply gorms, I appreciate the info. I don’t know enough about turbos to know what you are trying to tell me. The HE351CW”s 60 mm compressor, how does that compare to the compressor on my hx 35? And so what you are telling me is the 9cm turbin housing is different than on mine? It sounds like I might be better off changing the housing on my hx35. Cheaper and easier.

I figured you were looking for a little performance upgrade since you mentioned the HX40. HE351CW was factory installed in late 5.9 CR trucks, has a 60mm compressor wheel like certain HX40s. Will flow more air than the HX35, which is usually 56mm. The "tight" 9cm exhaust housing will spool quickly, but you will need the wastegate connected to control drive pressure.

I am biased to the 351 because they are cheap and fairly reliable.

Well YES I am always up for more performance but right now my main concern is to try to get my EGTs down so I can use the power I have now without worrying about burning up. Would the 351 be a help in keeping EGTs down? I pull loads over the continental divide at times and my EGTs go way up and I end up shifting down to 3rd. I’d like to be able to pull the pass in 4rth.
Thanks again, Marv

Marv:

I had an HX-40/16 on my 1996 Dodge CTD 12 valve for about three (3) years before I went to twin turbos. I had very good luck with the HX-40/16 even though I was told by some that "it would not last." I towed alot at the time and the HX-40/16 lowered my EGT's substantially over my HX-35/12. One thing I found was that you CANNOT use an HX-40 with the 18cm housing! In my opinion it is too large and made my 1996 Dodge CTD very "laggy." That was where I started and then went DOWN to the 16cm housing which worked great.
One other thing to keep in mind is that the HX-40/16 have good reliability as long as you keep the boost to around 30-35 lbs. For awhile that was the standard turbo that Cummins installed on their 8.3 liter in line six, however in those applications it had the 18cm housing.

As gorms said, the HE351CW is also a good turbo if you can find one in your area.

Good luck with whatever you decide Sir.

Yes, the HX-40 will bolt right up on your 1997 Dodge CTD.

Ok. Thanks John_P

If I remember right, the reliability issues with the HX-40 centered around the fact that it has the same diameter/strength shaft as the HX-35, and combined with larger compressor and turbine wheels, it over stressed it and people were busting the shafts. However, I think that was mainly with high boost levels (40+ psi) combined with letting off the throttle quickly.

My memory on this is going back 15+ years now, so I may not be remembering things right.

You can put a 60mm compressor wheel on you HX35. HX Upgrade Compressor Housing & Wheel (60mm, 6 blade)

Is there anything odd about the band clamp on the hx40? My truck runs a ps 62 with the hx40 downpipe and the crackheads who stole my truck took the band clamp. I need to order a new one, but see a variety of answers. Is it a weird taper or will any off the shelf 4" v band work?

thanks.

High Country:

There shouldn't be anything "odd" about the band clamp for an HX-40. You didn't say what brand of downpipe you have, but in my experience they are all pretty standard from the major manufacturers of those downpipes such as: Diamond, MBRP, Magnaflow, Flo-Pro etc. I know that the shop I deal with (Scheid Diesel) has very type of band clamp available. Give my friend Rob Scheid a call @ 1-800-669-1593 and tell him what is going on. I know he will be able to help you out Sir!
