How to know when your pump is going?

How do you know when your LP, or IP is starting to go?

I think mine has just slipped timing but I'm not quite sure.
Under light throttle it chugs pretty hateful.
IF you free rev it (I just noticed when I put the 5" dump on) it'll start spitting/fluttering @ the end of the fueling range.

I don't know what the previous owner had it set @ but I'm pretty sure he had anything and everything you could do mechanically maxed.
What is a good general setting for timing?

It has 370s, DVs, fuel plate, slid forward, starwheel maxed.

I thought maybe it was the starwheel as I read its the pre-boost fuel I figured maybe it was just dumping too much fuel in before boost built up to actually burn it?

Any suggestions, ect?

Place to start is checking your fuel pressure
check this out http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1996/14-07-96.htm

Usually they start acting funny. Staying out late, sudden surprise meetings to stay after work for. Then strange numbers showing up on the cell phone bill. Hang ups when you answer the phone. Unexplained new gifts.

Or you have low fuel pressure, infidel knows, infidel is wise.... welll on Cummins, not so much on the other stuff... [laugh]

For the other stuff:

Your 370s are marine I'm assuming? If so they have a wider spray pattern than standard, so advancing timing gets you spraying out of the bowl faster than a standard injector. In my opinion, I would advance it more than a couple of degrees over stock, if that.

Fuel filter? Checked it?

I( just did my first fuel pressure test today on my 95 Ram. I thought it ran fine. 7 bs and fluttering. Ordering overfow vave tomorrow. When I restricted the return hose as in the above TSB pressure maxed out on my 60 pound guage. Looking forward to seeing how performance changes.

Mine does the same... Turns out my FP was about 5psi at idle. Though I believe a lot has to do with my 160 pump I am still hoping that putting in an in-line regulator will help. [coffee]
