If you have installed a TST KDP kit I have questions

I'm installing a TST Products Killer Dowel Pin Kit on the truck in my signature. http://www.tstproducts.com/DowelPina.pdf

On Page-5 (Seal Installation) Step-4, after the seal is installed in the cover, it talks about installing a Black Rubber Dust Shield on the crank before re-installing the damper. I didn't get this shield, did anyone else get one with their kit? I tried calling TST but they are closed for the weekend.

Also, after the seal is installed they say to re-install the Semi Transparent Plastic Guide into the seal from the back side of the cover. Your then supposed to install the cover on the engine, then remove the guide. The guide is larger on the back end so I don't see how you will be able to pull it out from between the crank and the seal.

Can anyone who has done this give me some advice?

Thanks.

Well I must say, that seal was a whole lot of fun, . I just did one on my truck. I didn't use the TST kit, I forked out the excessively ridiculous amount of money on the Cummins updated timing case. I'm not sure if the kit should include it or not, you might want to call TST. But I know they run about $30 through Cummins. good luck and don't damage it, cause not many people have them in stock, at least not around here

I know it sounds kinda weird, but the transparent ring comes out no problem.

the ring will slid thru the seal when pushed on you place the ring part way thru the seal then onto the snout of the crank and push the ring will stay put and the seal will expand to the cranks dia. as for the dust shield i have no clue all i got was a seal and installation tool (clear ring) just make sure the seal is facing the correct direction and no lube on the seal surface.

I got the dust shield when I did the TST kit. It is there to help keep the dirt away from the crank seal. If you don't have one just forget it and continue. I have read where others have not known what its for and just threw it away. I don't think its really necessary. What is sealing the crank is the crank seal. It may be used on other applications like tractors but not ours.

The flimsy clear shield is plyable enough where it will just pull out from the front when you tug on it. It prevents the crank seal rubber lip from curling while installing as you slid the cover crank seal and flimsly seal onto the crank and bolt cover in place.. Be sure the crank is VERY clean before installing seal. Its a teflon seal and doesn't want any grease on it or it won't seal. Some have had them leak after any install.

I had printed the instructions prior to the kit arriving from TST, and was using them for the install. I just read the instructions shipped with the kit, and Page-5 Step-4 says to install the black rubber dust shield "IF" it was included in your repair kit. I guess some of the kits don't include the dust shield and the instructions shipped with the kit reflect this. The one's available online don't.

Also, after putting the plastic seal guide on the end of the crank I see now how it works. It's basically just a smooth ramp to open up the seal a bit larger than the crank diameter. Looks like it will just pull off after the cover is installed.

My radiator had a lot of debris on the back side, and since I was planning on installing new radiator hoses I pulled the radiator before anything on the engine. The shroud can then be removed and there is lots of room to remove the fan and clutch assm.

The KDP was below flush on my truck, and might never have come out but I won't be thinking about it now every time I drive the truck.

How much was the case and what is updated about it?

I installed it with the yellow side (dust seal) towards the damper and radiator.

Thanks for all responses.

I think it was in the $300 area from Cummins. The update is just a simple lip over the dowel pin hole.

I did email TST about the Black Rubber Seal that might be in the kit or not. It was never used in Dodge trucks and was indeed used in agricultural equipment, it won't hurt to use it on our trucks but its not needed.

I thought about getting a timing cover gasket from Cummins but ended up just using the RTV included in the TST kit. No leaks at all on my truck, I think the key is getting the cover and case clean and dry before applying the sealant.
