ok so on the way home from the store i shifted into 3rd gear and it is making a really bad grinding sound once it is in gear it sounds like something is touching the teeth on the fly wheel it dosnt do it in any other gear is it the clutch going out or could it be something else 97 dodge cummins 12v 5.9 5 speed

If it's only making noise in third it's likely a problem inside the transmission. Bent or worn shift fork would be an easy thing to look for by popping the top cover once the trans is out.

found the problem with my nv4500

Just curious....how many miles on that trans, and did you pull heavy with it?

 

Just bought a rebuild kit for my nv4500 from quad 4x4, pretty spendy.

 

it has around 370k that i know of with the 5th gear nut upgrade and the first owner pulled a Little Debbie trailer and the guy before me was a retired logger and me i havent done much towing with it as i did in 2012

 

what brand of kit did you go with?

 

The part number QK-1033, has everything but gears. $850.
