GEN light on
GEN light on
I have been driving so much lately for work and havent had any problems since the water pump went out a few months back but now as of yesterday the GEN light is on and I am going to throw a guess that it has something to do with the generator or charging system but this is another new area to me so any advise on where to start to find the problem would be awesome!!!!!! You guys always come through for me and I cant begin to express how much I and everyone else appreciates the knowledge available here!
If it is in fact the alt, my recommendation is to have it rebuilt in stead of buying a manufactured from a parts store. If you are handy with tools you can get a rebuild kit that has new brushes and bearings. If it is like mine it took more than the kit to fix it. the shop put a new diode pack and slip ring and it still cost less than a reman.

As a general rule they always need a new slip ring, thats what takes out the diodes, take it to the local rebuild shop you will be better off. the slip ring just presses on the rotor, after you un solder the leeds. easy to do if you want to try your self
I think it's Foster truck who has all the components needed to rebuild them yourself, including the slip ring.
Is the tach working?? Remember, if the ESS fails the PCM switches off and in doing so the Tach stops, the alt looses it's regulator and the tranny will not lockup....check that before assuming it's the alt. Also, try tapping on the alt casing with a rubber mallet before pulling- the brushes can stick and loose contact as they wear occasionally.

it was the alt, sadly i have my old totaled 96 12v available to me still {thanks for storage dad} so I checked fuse in black box, wires looked alright from alt to batteries so we pulled the alt off my old truck and put it on and sure enough it went from about 10 volts to just over 14 volts where we like it she is holding the charge and everything is good to go! for now hahaha
