Question fuel shutoff solenoid or relay???

My brother has a 96 model ctd. He is having issues with either the relay or solenoid for the fuel system. The problem is the solenoid isn't opening when starting the truck. He can open the hood and manually set the solenoid with the key in the on position. He has been to 4 dodge shops and no one can seem to say exactly what the problem is. One shop suggested replacing the relay. He doesn't mind spending the money to fix it. He just doesn't want to end up throwing part after part at it and not fixing his issue. This issue is intermitent which I don't know if that should tell us anything or not. He doesn't seem to think the problem is the relay because of it being sporadic. He feels like if the relay has gone south that it would not be sporadic. Personally, I think solid state items can break down over time and give you these type of issues. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks in advance...

Could still be the relay, and be sparatic. Mine was. No need to spend $50 for it at the dealer, either. It is only a 30 Amp relay.

I'd get the 70Amp one from here-

If the boot is gone or torn try spraying with WD-40 to lube it.
It may just be dry and dirty around the plunger.
I had this prob. one time and that fixed it.
there was no part faliure except the boot.

Also check that the blue wire (fusible link) at the driver's side battery isn't corroded under the insulation.

Similar problem

I am having a similar problem. Sound like a malfunctioning solenoid. I am trying to fix mine so I can save the $200 on a new one. Make sure all the wires are good as mentioned above. Good luck
