fuel shut off solenoid or choke cable?? please look
fuel shut off solenoid or choke cable?? please look
Ok the shaft on my shut off solenoid broke at the very end. I've been digging in past threads for a bit and there have been several problems like this. I was gonna look at a marine shop because outbaord motors use the same type of part to attach to their throttle and gear linkages. But, I have read a lot that people just do away with it and run a cable to manually shut her down. What do you guys think? Those who have the cable ( any regrets )?
Considering how many people needlessly replace the solenoid when the real problem is just a corroded wire at the battery or bad relay on the firewall it seems like there should tons of perfectly fine used solenoids around.
i did the choke cable and I don't really like it. if you were to do it with a nice push-pull cable like one for an automatic trans or something like that then it would be nice. but by the time you buy a good cable and all u might just as well spend a little more and do it right. on the flip side though it is kinda nice to shut the key off and take it with you and the truck still runs. will really confuse people that dont know about diesels when u turn off the key and it doesnt shut down.

yeah I bought a " universal cable " and it is a hunk of junk. I was thinking about doing it because of the simplicity.plus I was thinking If I had a cable like a throttle cable with a handle that turns to hold the cable in any position I could defuel the truck a little with it. But I have to do alot of research to find out if that would be problematic to the pump or any thing else. Just one of those ideas goin through my head. on the fly power ranges for a 12 valver
I am new to these trucks, but solenoids themselves are fairly robust devices by nature. The laws of electromagnetism never stop working however external factors may... the cylinder/bore may need some TLC or, as some have noted, its required power source is not available.
Right now I am running a pull cable. So long as you keep it PB'd or the likes it will work alright. Had to get it free'd up when I first got it, the wing nut before me mounted it in the kickpanel and destroyed it cause you had to pull for all you are worth to get it to go far enough. Its a nice little "safety device" But Shutting it down with the key is "nice" as well.
If you get a solinoid, make sure you know how to set it up. I got a FSM with the truck and the Factory has specs on the rod length. I can tell ya how to do it if you need to know, just shoot me a PM.

well I have the cheap choke cable inside my ashtray I removed the bulb and there is a square hole there. my handle faces straight down inside the ashtray I just cut a round hole in the inside of the tray itself " just the inner lining " so that the **** has somewhere to go when I close the ashtray. its setup so that with the handle in it is on and when I pull it out thats when it shuts off. that way no one ever knows it even exist and no accidents. I also have a flat panel only 1/16th of an inch think on the inside of my ashtray mounted on the side. I can shut off or turn on any gauge at any time seperatly. its like the control center now.
all I need to do now is find a better cable, this thing is just to cheaply made.
