fuel sensor

looking at a 97 for sale the ad says fuel sensor inoperative truck has 150,000 what do you guys think he is talking about?????.....thanks

Probably "water in fuel" sensor, located at the bottom of the fuel filter. Sometimes the wires get wet and cause a false reading.

Or it could be the fuel level sensor, very common problem.

like as in fuel tank level gauge??? hard to fix???

Usually the problem is just the sender, about $60 from the dealer.
Dealer parts guy may say you have to buy the entire $300 tank module, not true.
Replacement wouldn't be hard except in order to access the top of the fuel tank you have to either drop the tank or tilt up the bed.
I prefer tilting the bed.

I was able`to repair the fuel sending unit in the tank there is a little arm that
makes contact with the sending unit.This is an easy fix took me about 2hr.

I think most people with these trucks have a fuel level gauge that doesn't work right. No biggie...

Personally the labor of getting at the tank makes me feel like a new sender is a good idea. The new senders are improved and don't fail as often.
