First road trip and 2 questions
First off, Put new wheel bearings in about 3 months ago and lost the drivers side right before we left, NAPA warrantied it but after the first leg of 600 miles the drivers side was about 1 groove on the castle nut loose before it hit 175#'s, then when I got home the same deal any ideas?
Secondly I had about 500#'s in the bed with a 3500# boat behind me and coming up the Westernly side of the Eisenhour tunnel I could only hold my EGT's at about 1300 with the occasional jump to 1400 which kept up for about 4 miles (55 in 4th gear @ 2200 RPM, 5th gear caused an instant 1600 but only for about 10 seconds till I got it cooled down). Noticed when I got home I was at about 50% in my overflow. Head Gasket? Is there any way to check it? I know gassers (ran a shop for 7 years) and in that instance we just pulled the plugs out which obviously won't work now.

if you killed your head gasket the raidator or oil pan or both will be full of milk shake or at least you will have oil spots floating in the rad you should see them when you tahe the cap off sometimen they only leak oil around the head sealing serface so look there expecialy in the front
Wonder what he would do if he seen a pullers EGT gauge after a pull???.
Keep and eye on the coolant as the temps you seen were not that out of line.Look it over for leaks or coolant streaks down the sides of the block or drips on the pavement below.Top it off and run it a while......Andy

Here's the thing. This is my driver, it gets me to and from work every day and the last thing I need is problems. So far after my 40 mile drive in to work the cooland is holding steady but gonna keep an eye on it. Once I get around (time and $$) to putting a new head gasket in it with either fire rings or o-rings and a new exhaust manifold the EGT's won't bother me that much but being basically stock it made me a bit nervous. Also roughly how long would it take to do damage with my stock engine at 1300-1400 EGT's?
Thanks guys, still picking up the diesel tech but with the gasser backround it's happening relatively quickly so hopefully in the near future I'll be able to answer ?'s rather than just posting them.

Keep in mind that ambient air temp plays a big role in egt's. I noticed that in the summer on hot days, i will run aprox 250 more than in the winter or on a really cool night in the summer.
I don't believe you got a head gasket issue, engine finally got warm enouugh to put some coolant into the overflow bottle. These trucks have a super large cooling system on them and it takes quite a bit to get them warm enough to push coolant into the overflow.
Sorry, don't know what to think about your wheel bearing.

Something that plays a far bigger role in EGT is the AFC position and starwheel. You have them set for maximum temperature. Experiment by small movements back to standard position, you will find a location where power is OK and EGTs are in control. Of course, you might need the your trailer and the Eisenhauer grade to do this.

DSL's been down since my last post. The max boost I get is 20#'s. I was planning on either blocking off the wastegate or getting the J-Hook for it. What are the issues with just blocking off the wastegate?
well thats your egt temp issue...
only problem with just blocking the wastegate is making too much boost, but you might not have enough fuel for that.
try blocking it and just dont go over 35psi
