exhaust gasket.
exhaust gasket.
Is there an exhaust gasket between the turbo and the exhaust manifold? I finally found where mine is leaking causing my high pitched squeal when I engage the exhaust brake. Actually found some time to get under the hood and snoop around.
The reason I ask is when I had the head ripped off and repaired last fall they commented on the fact that it had been leaking there. So I'm wondering if it's like other makes of trucks where there is no gasket and maybe I can get one to install there. I don't really want to pull it apart until I have all the goodies in my hot little hands to do the work. Anything else I should get before I rip her off. Like for example is the turbo drain gonna move enough for me to just slide the turbo out far enough to sneak a new gasket in there with a little permatex smooshed on to seal her up. Have not really got a good look at the project as the wife has had me pretty busy doing other things around the house. So the only time I get to steal is at work in the dark parking lot.

Yes they is a steel shim gasket, undo the down pipe and intake it should move out of the way to get the new gasket in. cheque that the flanges are smooth if its bean leaking for some time now.
Make sure the flanges on the turbo and man are clean and install a new gasket. I would disconect the oil lines to do this job. Usually if I don't, there will be an oil leak when I think I'm done. If the eng has been run hard, sometimes the man will warp a little and need to be refaced in order to hold a gasket. I've seen some people use muffler cement on there to seal it with some success. When you install the turbo, torque the bolts evenly and make sure the exh pipe is loose so it does not pull or bind the turbo. Also make sure the bolts or nuts are grade 8 and use antiseize on the threads.
Thanks guys...
Ran over to the local Cummins dealer and picked up two new gaskets - now just have to swap them out - who's gonna help - I have beer
Anywho... here are the part numbers and prices...
3901356 - Gasket, Turbocharger $2.59
3937706 - Gasket, Oil Drain $1.23
Govnr's cut 0.23 (gotta have his hand in everything ya know)
Total $4.05
So I'm happy... but would be happier if someone wanted to help drink beer while I watch them do the install - I make a good tool getter
So come this weekend I should be back to Exhaust Braking with no whistling... Fingers crossed I get the time (no more duties added to the Honey Do list)...

Ricken Fracken
It started leaking again... I made for sure that the surface was clean, did not check it for flatness but looks like it gonna need to be surfaced. Now my question is how often does it tend to warp the turbo or does it normally just warp the exhaust man flange?
Then my question is can I resurface it? We have a very small surface grinder here that I'm pretty sure it won't fit on (might but doubt it) but we have a nice end mill that I can set up. I don't have much machining experience but I can make shavings
I'm thinking about fly cutting it back about 2-3 thou...
