Electrical/Starter issues
This on the '94 auto in my sig.
Problem started intermittently about last Aug/Sep, I think after I put the rebuilt tranny in and had the starter off. I could just turn the key sometimes to start and click nothing. I could try again a few minutes later and it would start fine. It finally has gotten to the point where I can't start it at all with the key. If I put the key at ON and short the starter leads together, it starts and runs fine, and I can shut it off with the key. I have replaced the ignition switch. I've also tried moving the gearshift thru every gear but no luck. All the fuses are fine. Thoughts? [director] |
I would get an intermittent start problem on my 98 when the starter solenoid contacts were worn out. I bought a new set of aftermarket on ebay for not much money. The new ones had a greater surface area of contact and they are still working since 04. The only thing that makes me think it could be something else is jumping it with a screw driver.
Your starter motor itself has to be fine, or it wouldn't turn when shorted. The question is are you shorting battery wire directly to the motor windings? If so then contacts are it. I guess worst case could be the whole solenoid not working. Make sure your signal wire from the ignition is producing power to the solenoid, or like you were looking you could have an ignition switch problem. If you are getting a click noise then it isn't a switch problem, again solenoid. I am definitely leaning towards solenoid. Hope this helps. -Greg Ebay repair link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DODGE...Q5fAccessories |
