Early 2-3 shift point for a 97 with a lower stall converter?

Hey everyone,

I'm planning on upgrading my TC and VB fairly soon, I've been told that doing so will result in my transmission shifting earlier then it does today with WOT and going from second to third. The rpm drop will be from ~2600 to ~2300.

Apparently, this has do to with the computer controlled shift points in the 97 47re transmissions. At 40 mph the computer will say hey, it's time to shift and force the shift point. Does anyone know of a work around?

Thanks!

Does anyone have an upgraded converter and valve body on a '96 through '98? If so, how has your 2-3 shift point been effected?

Thanks!

96 with an early shift condition under "very light" throttle, not a problem at WOT!

I have the light throttle, early upshift problem on mine, with the Transgo kit. The instructions say to turn the TV screw in, but not how much. I tried 2/3 of a turn, wasn't enough. I'm planning on calling them to find out how much to turn it, when I'm not so busy.

Mcmopar - do you have an upgraded valve body / converter?

Under WOT I was told that with the new (lower stall) converter and valve body my truck would shift earlier than stock @ around 2300 rpms.

i have a Goerend tranny, converter ..... whole 9 yards... i have an early shift at light throttle and at 2300 or so at WOT.... i was told by Dave that he's working on getting a fooler so the comp dosen't see the high fluid pressure..... if it really bothers you just manually shift it..... that's what i do....

Thanks 88bird, that confirmed what I was hearing as well. I spoke with Dave a couple days ago and he said the same thing, although he didn't mention the trick you referred to.

I was hoping there might be a PCM flash or something else along those lines that would resolve the problem.

Yes,

It's a low stall single disc converter, with a valve body I built using Dave G components. I upgraded the internals to have more clutches, etc, etc.

My guess is that you're not expirencing this because you have a 98.5 which (I'm guessing) has a different shift control mechanism.

Thanks everyone, it sounds like I’ll have to live with the “2-3 stacked shift” for the foreseeable future.
