i agree on lack of maintance also, my truck has 160k and its a pos sometimes but i'm working on it. imo fixing stock axle would be easier and cheaper than swapping out for different axle. i changed every wear part and steering box for 900 bucks off rock auto, some parts are not as good as i wanted but at the time i was poor so not much choice when wheels are falling off.

i know that i run her down a bit. everytime i go to fix something small id get called to work or have to put that money to something else, like a transmission or a water well or the wife would decide to do a small reno. she just kept starting so it wasnt a big deal.

how much maintance does a tranni with less then 35000km on it need?

i dont know how the dodge system works. i drive a kenworth too and i cant even lock the diffs at 20km/h or theyll lose teeth. though that is an animal that is completely different.

solution

after a winter of pain regarding my 99, i have decided to retire it.
will the axle from my 99 bolt right onto my 97?
where is the best place to remove the axle, above or below the springs?
are all of the steering parts the same?
will i be able to take the steering parts from the 99 to fix the 97?

The '99 should have the T-style steering, while the '97 will have the inverted-Y. Bring over all the steering arms from the '99 to the '97 while you're at it. Well worth your while.

Trailing arms are the same. Here is a comparison, with the inverted-T on the bottom, Inverted-Y on top. They changed it because Inverted T is better:

I have never done the conversion, as my '98 came with inverted-T from the factory, but from what I understand, the pickup points are all the same and just the arms themselves are different.

the the difference between a t style and a y style is 4 inches. imagine that.
noticed that the stabilizer bar perches at the axle are different is there a perfered style? it looks like they both mount on the frame.
