Do search on KDP and you find TONS of info.
I just tabbed mine last weekend. Made my own tab and used the bolt next to the problematic pin and you just cover the pin to keep it from coming out.
No puller needed for the balancer, just mark it and the crank so it goes on the same way it came off.
Replace your main seal while your in there and the new seal will come with a tool that helps in re-installing the cover so you dont mess up the seal.
You might want to replace your timing cover gasket too, but thats your choice.
I used an air chisel to remove the fan nut, was reluctant at first, but its the only thing i got to work. (Note: They are left hand threads.)
I also removed some of the bolts inside the case (I could only get to two) and put lock tite on them and retourqed them.
It was a easy process, tips like above save alot of time.
Good luck -Jake

In a nut shell, the pin can vibrate out (design flaw) and fall into the gears and crack the timing gear case, damage gears, bend cam shaft, etc. If all that happens youre pretty unlucky. Most cases are that the case gets cracked and thats it. Like me.
I strongly advise that you fix the KDP problem ASAP or youll be cusing your self for not doing it when it fails.
Two methods
1. Tab method (explained above)
2. Jig method ( Do a search) Uses a jig made for fixing this problem and puts a screw though the case in front of the pin. Timing cover removal is not nessecary for the jig method.

it does affect your truck diesel_kid, it is a pin in the timming case that falls out and into the gears this is not good, this = big$$$$ to fix i still need to get it fixed. its one of those things that could happen at 20,000 miles or never. chris

Downlow, my truck needs it too. It's a 97 12V. The guys up north do 'em all the time. they are J & H Performance. They remove the front cover and tab the dowel. It runs $250.00 and that includes the $60.00 gasket.
Harvey told me they get about 1 to 2 a week in there on the hook from the dreaded dowel pin.

When I got mine done a month or so ago, the shop called me in to show me that the pin was sticking out about 1/4 inch. I guess I got lucky by having it done when I did. It did cost me about $175 for the fix though. In my case, I suppose that is cheaper than if I wouldn't have worried about it for another six months and had it finish it's trip out of it's cave.
