Cummins Jake Brake
 

Okay, I know that this may seem like a stupid question, but here we go. I was wanting to know if any company makes or anyone on here has tried to make a actual jake brake for there 12 valve. I do not mean a exhaust brake that goes in the exhaust, it mean a jake brake on the head. Thanks.

Some guy a year or two ago was talking about doing it for his engennering project but i could not tell you exactly when or where to search and i dont know what ever became of it. I do know it was going to take some real work.

As long as the engine has a flat tappet cam, it cant be done. there is no cam actuated injectors on this engine, so you would have to use another cyl. exh. valve to actuate the opening of the firing cyl. exh. valve and the cam would not survive. For years you couldnt get jake brakes for the ISC, because of three things , one is a calibration for the ECM, other was the ISC was a flat tappet cam engine until the ISC CM850 came out it now has roller lifters, even then they didn't offer a jake because the piston were not cut for valve relief. Cummins finally offered the Jake brake on the 07 engine.

i asked the jacob co about it awhile back he said theirs not enough braking to make it do any good

That would have been me. I did some serious research on it and it would be ridiculously difficult to do. Essentially the engine would have to be torn down to a bare block and completely rebuilt. The head, cam and pistons would have to be changed and the block itself would have to be reworked for clearances for some stuff. The total cost would be too much to be economically feasible...
