you need a 15MM socket to remove the balancer. it is not pressed on to the crankshaft. the 4 bolts are TIGHT ! if you have a stick shift trans, put it in 4th gear, lock the parking brake, and use a long breaker bar to loosen them. if you have an automatic trans, take off the small tin cover on the bottom of the bellhousing and use a large screwdriver to hold the flywheel. once the bolts are out you can take the balancer with your hand.

If you just want to"check" the KDP, you can buy a small bore scope to use with your phone or tablet to take a peek. You can get one very cheap. The one I got was only $20.

i have to replace the crank seal and timing cover gasket anyways. Otherwise that would be a great anf much easier way to go as long as the pin had been tabbed in

You can find those 'scopes on eBay - I think they are usually listed as endoscopes. I have heard they produce a much clearer picture with a laptop than with a phone. I don't know where a tablet falls in the pic-quality range.
You can also get a "barring tool" to turn or hold the crankshaft. A lot of people don't like them because they cause a few $, but I prefer to use that. If you need to turn the crank very carefully for pump timing or something like that, its hard to beat. It has the advantage that my wife can use my large breaker bar to turn/hold the engine if I need her to and not have to go under the truck! LOL
