Changing gear ratio from 4.10 to 3.54
I just purchased a '97 Ram 2500 CTD 4X4 with a gear ratio of 4.10. From what I can remember reading on the subject of the drivetrain, I believe the ring and pinion gears can be changed in the differential to convert to a 3.54. Just wondering if anyone out there has attempted this changeover or had it done successfully to improve mpg as I am more interested in better mpg than towing power. Also, I'm guessing that both front and rear axles must have this change performed simultaneously.

How about a taller tire? A 255/85 will give you about 3 to 3 1/2 inches lift and thus lower your gear ratio a bit. It's easy to correct the speedometer on your truck too - Just replace the VSS gear.

Hey accordionjohn
If you do buy the new gears, Id have an interest in buying your 4:10's.

I currently run the 3:54 gears but I'd like to hang on to them. However, I would be VERY interested in your old 4:10's.

Let me know. You can either PM me or email me.

Thanks

Rich.
