carbon on one piston
carbon on one piston
I bought a 12v off of doodah (a nice fellow ) out of IA this weekend. The guy that owned it said it white smoked when cold and maybe used some oil. When I pulled the head off sunday the motor looked great inside, all of the cylinder walls still had the crosshatch on them. All of the pistons were clean except one which had carbon built up on the top. It wasn't real thick but it kind of stuck out with the rest of the pistons clean. I didn't pull it down any farther as I'm not going to use it right now except to finish my twin setup on so my truck won't be down for long. Could the rings not have sealed on this hole or could this be a valve guide problem. I just wondered if anyone else had run into a problem like this. I'm sure it's a simple fix as I'll pull the motor completely down this summer and check it out. Thanks,Gary
Well, that makes since. The motor will get different injectors when it gets put together. Will this have hurt the rings in any way. The cylinder walls all look real good in this motor. Thanks,Gary

I bought this motor without a injection pump and I'm sure to put big injectors in it when it gets put together so all injection problems will be taken care of. Probably go ahead and ring it while it's down this far.
I have no experience in ringing a diesel. How successful is that? Do you knurlize the pistons , etc., to counteract wear or must you do a bore job, new pistons, valve job, etc.? Sorry, I guess that's a whole new thread. Charlie.
gary, I talked to the previous owner of the engine, and he was running bigger injectors, Not sure what, cause he got the truck with them in there!{He bought the truck from his younger bro!} So, I called the younger bro, and he said he had some #300 in there when he sold it. The 215 injector pump had been played with by a diesel shop in eastern IA, cost him $1200, whatever he had done. I noticed , the turbo{ITS FAIRLY NEW!!} was wastegated and still had the S ring, and he was running stock air cleaner,No other mods then injectors and pump work. the injectors you got with the engine were the stock 180s out of the engine I sold him. So if you think that the problem is with the way he was running the truck, let me know, so he does not have the same problem agian!.
P.S. thanks for the "NICE FELLOW" part!
back at ya!!

Shawn, if he is not useing the same injectors he will probably be alright. I can't see a pump causing this kind of deal but there are people on here that can answer that question alot better than I can. Hmm, maybe it is the 215 pump, ya better sell it to me before he has problems again.
Thanks,Gary
