Busted Timing Cover!

Worked on a early 98 Dodge 2500 with a 12 valve 5.9 this weekend, One of the dowel pins for the timing cover fell out and jammed against the cover between the cam gear. It knocked a chunk out of the Alum cover but did not hurt anything just made a big oil leak.
Anybody have this happen before?
Thanks!
DRJ

Look at the thread just below this one called "kdp victim". It is a very involved process to replace the timing cover because the cam or the cam gear needs to be pulled. The links in that thread are good and include some pictures on what is involved to do the repair.

kdp victim

DR, the the "kdp victim" thread is mine, and its going to involve some work, thats for sure. All the parts from Cummins lists for almost $600. But I got a good deal off of e-bay for a new case, and seals. Now I just have to give myself a few weeks on letting my back heal up be fore I start the ordeal.

Somis, what sort of deal did you get? I got mine for $9800 out the door, along with a check from the dealer for $600 for the parts. A 98 4x4, 5speed one owner, all stock, brand new tires, and 131k on the clock. Couldnt pass on the deal.

Bob.

If no damage to gears, you could epoxy the hole and let'er roll. the dowel is in pan by time you find the problem. Not my finest hour.

deal of a lifetime

Strokerace,
I sleep real well. Just one of those good luck deals ya cant pass up. and this truck is real clean, 3 verey, verey small dents, and a couple little scratches. But it was owened buy a retired guy. The only after market thing on it is a K&N drop in filter, and a fold down hitch in the bed. Sorry for gloatin.

Dozer, I dout there is any damage to the gears, this truck runs super smooth, and for temp fixin the case it has been done, and still leaking a qt. every three days. Besides I just got the new case, and front seal, with an extra cover for $160. So shes gettin fixed here in a couple weeks, just had back surgrey last tuseday, so I better let heal up some before tearing into her.

Bob

And for you Drj, if your lookin for a new cover, cummins just told me today that one off a 24v will work, they have the same part number.

Somewhere I recall that gasket might be cut in half and slipped behind gears and glued back together. Maybe it was for another application though.
Pulling the camshaft is a XXXXX in the truck.

The 12v and 24v DO NOT share timing cases. The mounting pattern, as well as the size of the hole for the IP is different. The 24v will have 4 holes and a dowel to align the IP, 12v will just have the 4 stud holes. Also check to see if it has the stepped hole for the dowel. If it does, you won't need to worry about tabbing the dowel.

$10,750.00 with 94,000 miles on er. the next lowest price I could find on a 12 valve here in california was $16,000.00

dont trust every one

Tate, thanks for the correct info. Its bad when ya cant even get a right answer from a guy who has the books there in front of them. Well the case I have still has the ID tag on it with a 99 build date. But its painted tan, and is stamped with a 230 hp rating @2500 rpm's. But it dose have the 4 stud holes, with the 2 out aide studs still in it, and it has the steped dowel hole.
Now do the 24v still have the same valve lash as the 12v's? Because its stamped on there 10/20 like the 12v's. I might have to call my buddy out in Oregon at Cummins west to get the correct info, and run down the engien vin# off this case. Thanks agian Tate for you info.

Thanks for all of the info! I put the part that broke off back on and use two part epoxy to fasten it with. I found the KDP on top of the cam gear, the gears where not hurt. This was not my truck but a friend who is on a realy tight budget and has a baby due next month so he needed to save his coins. I finished on Monday and he has been driving it with no problem. This is the first small Cummins that I have worken on. I am a tractor mechanic by trade and work on alot of diesel engines. The ideal of the dowel pin strikes me as odd that Cummins would make a design like that. I don't recall any thing like that on the bigger Cummins engines. I have worked on the 855N and big cam 10's that where used in farm tractors. again thanks fellows. If yall have a problem with your tractor give me a shout.
Thanks!

Lash is .010/.020 like the 12v's.

The cummins PN is 3936256 for the updated 12v timing case. That number should be cast in the somewhere.
