broken timing pin in P7100???

I've been workin on the truck to fix a busted timing case & after reinstalling my injector pump I pulled the plug for the plastic timing pin & noticed that one of the ears(the part that looks like the nock on an arrow) was broken off, I tried finding it in the hole on the side but no luck , I didn't see it on the ground anywhere, but it could have been flushed out w/some of the oil that came out of the pump???? is there any chance it might settle in the bottom of the pump & not hurt anything???? thank, Dusty

Wow, that's a nasty one and I've never seen it before. I'd be worried too. If I recall, those ears are metal right? Can you remove that big round plug on the side, or the rear inspection cover, and fish around with a magnet? Maybe even removing the AFC hsg. and turning the pump upside down. You could pour a cup of solvent in there and swish it around first to flush the piece out. I know it means removing the pump again, but I know I'd be happier if the piece was out.

Good luck.

the piece is plastic, which I guess could be good if I can't find it, but if it were metal it sure would be easier to find, it's not a huge chunk of plastic or anything so hopefully it won't hurt anything if I can't find it, but maybe someone else will chime in with some words of wisdom???dusty

thought I'd give an update, took my pump back off & now it's at a local pump shop, they are gonna fish out the broken plastic piece & check the pointer to see if it's bent & either staighten/replace it, the only good thing that I'm getting out of this deal is 16.5 degrees of pump timing!!!!!! :p oh well, as much $ as its costing to fix this screw up at least I'm getting my pump timed cuz it was in bad need!!!! I hope to have it all buttoned back up & running tomorrow evening, just a side note to anyone who is re-installing a pump, you want to torque the nut that holds the pump gear on to around 35 ft.lb.'s & then you can un-pin the pump & finish torque'n the nut to 170-175 ft.lb.'s, this would have been real useful info. to me  , guess I should have known, but it's just somethin i overlooked I guess???? hope this might save someone else some trouble someday, Dusty

Solution!

DO NOT REMOVE THE PUMP UNTIL YOU BUY A NEW PIN.
1) reset the motor to TDC
2) lock the fuel pump with the new pin.
3) remove the pump.
4) remove the AFC Housing (the box with the fill plug held on by 4 bolts)
5) empty the pump by picking it up, fliping it over and dumping the fluid through the AFC opening over a screen or some other catch. ( I used a plastic storage container and the lid to my fire pit)
5a) it may require that you refill the fuel pump several times with old used oil or diesel fuel to wash it out. (I used diesel, with much sloshing, and fiddling with the throttle, and eventually it fell out onto the screen after 4 tries.)

I found that you can buy new pins on ebay and puredieselpower:

P7100 Injection Pump Timing Pin

Dodge 12 Valve Cummins P-7100 Timing Lock Pin

Ebay ads not allowed on DTR

For me, searching by part number(1423124108) on ebay yielded the best price for an original part.

You are aware this thread is over 10 years old correct?

Yes! Which is why I'm even more surprised that no solution can be found elsewhere. But you know that already, right?
