Boost Question
I just installed a boost gauge yesterday. My 96 is stock other then a 4" exhaust. What should my readings be at idle, 60 mph, and WOT? Is it better to compare my boost pressure to RPM's, or MPH? I'm trying to find out if my truck has boost issues, or if its just a dog (till I add some mods). This truck is a slug under about 1,800 RPM's. [verymad]

at idle you will have no boost, boost is dependant on fuel and engine load, depending on your wastegate settings and fueling mods your readings can be different.
Most stock trucks (24valve) will see max 20-21psi at wot under load, and maybe 7-10psi crusing at 60mph depending on grade and headwind. what are you seeing for boost |
Here is what I have:
3 lbs. @ 1,500 RPM's 6 lbs. @ 1,750 12 lbs. @ 2,000 I have not had a chance to open it up on the freeway. Does this look about right for a stocker? |
Looks normal enough. Boost is more related to engine load, as opposed rpm. On a flat stretch of highway, my boost will vary between 3-20 psi depending on temp and wind.
As long as your EGT's are relatively cool, don't be terribly concerned about the boost numbers. |
Pretty much the only constant "measurable" boost is max boost (on a stock truck). Just get up to speed around 45 or so and hit full throttle. Should only take a second or two at that speed to see max boost. If you hit around 18-22psi then its working fine. Signs of boost leaks would be slight (might not even be able to hear) hissing sound under load and excessive black smoke.
