Depends

Anytime im towing anything i start in first, if im empty i start in second, Second will not slip the clutch enough in my opinion that i need to start in first. Plus if im in traffic, A first gear launch, straight exhaust, and everyone tailgatin me (till smoke comes outta the pipe ) id rather get outta there a lil quicker and not rattle my brain on a rapid shift.

With a load, Even a two horse or an empty sixteen footer, i use first, My theory is if you are towing something, its better to be safer than sorry, and just take your time, minimize all hazards, and startin off in first, you will not slip the clutch, even a 1500 lb 16 footer, will cause a lil slippage, even though u dont feel it behind your ram, But its just the way i drive it, thats the only explanation i can give...

Thanks!

Tx

I always start in second, unless I'm loaded, then it's first. Sometimes, it depends on the terrain, I'll start in second with an empty trailer only. I've also got the DD clutch which is made to do the heavy towing like I do, or so I've been told

Start in 1st with a load on or if I am on soft ground/ incline. It seems easier to quickshift to second with quick stint in 1st. I find I can get rolling faster with a 1st gear start than trying to pull out in 2nd.

Empty, second 75-80% of the time.

I start in first when there's nobody behind me---I love running though the gears, but I've almost been rear-ended a number of times when someone crept up on me as I did the 1-2 shuffle

Start out in 1st on pavement 3.54 gears 36in tall tires and a grabby con fe. Use 2nd on gravel, dirt tires can slip alittle.

Well now, after 330K miles, I still start in first all the time. I'm an old man and habits are impossible to break. Anyway, I'm just on my third clutch towing as much as I do. 15k most of the time.
