Best place to buy performance camshaft, 12v

I am looking to upgrade my camshaft in m 97' 12v. Any suggestions on where to shop for one?

Hamilton or Colt would be recommendations.

Speaking of cams, I had to take the cam out of my 98 so we could reseal the houseing and putting the cam gear back on and timing it I torqued it to 150 lbs. Not enough, it slipped. This time I put 250 lbs to it and red locktite. So far so good. I almost was going to heat of the gear then torque it down. What do you guys do for this procedure ?

infidel 12-20-2012 12:01 PM

The shaft and gear must be clean enough to eat off before you torque the nut down to 150 ft/lbs.
I use spray electronic cleaner because it leaves no residues.
Putting anything on the shaft including LocTite will cause the gear to slip.
If you're having to fix slipped timing more than once replace the washer also.
Do not overtorque, I've seen 175 ft/lbs crack the gear, then it really slips.

Infidel,
What do you feel makes the pdr cam a better option than colt or hamilton?

I haven't compared them.
At the time the choices were few and PDR has an excellent reputation.

Colt cuts their cams anyhow, skip the middle man and go right to Geoff. The fact that they only offers regrinds doesn't sit well with me. And the fact that they add a premium to Canadian customers, even though the dollar has been at or above par for the better part of 4 years still irks me.

infidel 12-21-2012 11:46 AM

Nice thing about PDR is they have a shop on both sides of the border, helps with shipping cost and wait.

I have to agree with Tate. That disturbs me also. PDR is in Canada and so are we,yet we pay more.

I am going to go with Colt. I talked to Hamilton and he thinks that they can get my torque peak to come in at a lower RPM.
