Ok so i have been driveing ctd for years but this is my first auto. i am conserned about the shifting. the think shifts great through all the gears but when i turn the od off it seem to only go to 3rd gear rpm 2500 at 60. Push the od button back on it shifts to 4 th then to od. is this normal or is something out of wack?

mine only goes to 3rd with od off but does lock convertor in 3rd then unlocks convertor when i hit the od on button then shifts to 4 th and then lu .
with aditional l u switch i can lock in 3 l u and switch dictrectly to 4 l u

 

I'm not an expert but I didnt think there was a 4th gear. I thought 1-2-3-od. I'll pay attention next time I drive.

 

4th is overdrive. When the converter locks it feels like another gear though.

 

47rh-re/48re is a 4-speed trans. 4th being OD. Depending on the year of the truck, transmission shift strategies are different.

 

I had the same question when I got mine. Feels like more gears, but TC lockup is what you're feeling. 1st gear, 2nd gear, 3rd gear (if od is off, you will feel TC lockup here like another gear), 4th gear (OD), 4th gear TC lockup. Actually feels like 6 gears if you go to 3rd tc lockup then go to OD, then OD tc lockup.

 

yes thats one nice thing about the automatics- you can have lockup in town (with the OD turned off / light is on), & on the highway too (OD is on, light in od button is off)
