auto tranny up grade questions

If I upgraded the torque converter and put on upgrade valve body will the rest of the tranny hold up if so how much can I go up in power with just doing these mods I would like to do the whole thing but 3500.00 wow.

Re:auto tranny up grade questions

My guess is you would just add more stress to the rest of the components causing them to fail prematurely.
Personnaly I will not start upping my own power till I have the Tranny to handle it. Which hopefully will not be too long from now!

Re:auto tranny up grade questions

All depends on how you drive. My auto lasted for 320,000Km. The trannies are not really bad, but remember to keep the revs up before going into OD, and limit the number of WOT starts from a stop.
Hope you get the right stuff!

Re:auto tranny up grade questions

think about throttle/line pressures versus your power curve/shift points...and many other factors. like i've said before, i know someone who has put 82 or 85,000 miles on his truck with just a valve body and torque converter. he's had BD8's in his truck for at least 5 months that i know of, NOS, twins, FMS, etc...making 640hp at the last dyno day. he says that he raced almost every weekend...never broke a shaft or anything (yeah, he CAN drive his truck like most us can't-taught me a lot when it comes to that stuff). Now the tranny is broken.

i'm not saying it's the best thing to do, because it's bound to break sometime or another, but those two alone can hold some good power and be reliable.

Tom

My DTT didn't cost but about little over half that. ???

Re:auto tranny up grade questions

Just the valve body and torque converter would be cheaper.
But, Heck, why not go all out and get the whole transmission.

3499.00 but figure in shipping and install too.
Do I hear 4,000?

How 'bout billet input and output shafts too?

Re:auto tranny up grade questions

Seems like just getting a converter and valve body would just put more pressure on the rest of the tranny
Re:auto tranny up grade questions

Top if you get the upgrades along with them you will be getting the same as you would with the whole trans. :)

The TC and VB is the trans other than a few clutches, gears, shafts, seals and gaskets that can be upgraded. And the trans case.

boughtadodge:

The other members have already given you some
good advice!

Don't make the same mistake I did. At about 98,000
miles my "stock" transmission was beginning to show
wear. I began to experience the familiar 4th gear (O.D.)
"shudder" when I was towing my racing trailer in the
mountains. Thinking I could "get by" with just a new
TC and valve body after that many miles turned out
to be a mistake! About 3,000 miles after I had the
new TC and valve body installed, I began experiencing
a problem where the tranny wouldn't shift into third
gear right. Anyway, I ended up having to back into
the tranny to have new seals, clutch packs etc.
installed.

I would recommend saving up the money until you
have enough to completely go through your entire
transmission. This is especially true if your truck
has alot of miles on it.

Good luck!

---------
John_P

Re:auto tranny up grade questions

You didn't mention the mileage on your truck, since its an older truck I would at the very least have it gone through internally and replace anything that needs it. The price would depend solely on what was broke or in need of repair. I just went through mine at 40k........and replaced the 3rd gear clutches, 2nd gear band and the rear planetary, thats it. I did some upgrades while it was out which is the whole reason I went inside it this time, billet input and front hub with a few other things. I ran just a shift kit for a while at about 300hp, and then a simple VB and TC for a while low 500's on hp.....it had about 125 to 140 dragstrips runs.....lil bit of sled pullin, and multiple nights of harassing the local racers, oh and ran out of fluid completely once too.

I was shocked it "needed" so little.

Re:auto tranny up grade questions

The truck shows 142,000 on the clock but I have no idea if it has had any work done the shifts are sharp without hesitation I posted another question as how to tell if it has a low stall converter I put the truck in reverse and stood on the brake and reved the engine and it started to pull at less than 1000 rpm and somewhere around 1500 the tires broke loose. I have read that they are suppose to stall to about 2300 but this one seems lower than that but I do not know for sure

chuck3 11-30-2002 09:47 AM

Re:auto tranny up grade questions

Try that in Drive next time, the tires will break loose in reverse sooner than they will in drive.
