Alternator Options?

For awhile now I've had a little trouble with my charging system, my batteries are fairly new, but some mornings the truck just won't start. I have a Georend Valve body kit and a triple disc converter that keeps the rpm's down really low. When I'm just driving around town, the voltage rarely would get above 14v, mostly because rpm's would only be slightly higher than idle. I would have prety low voltage from the alternator unless i was on the highway. My stall is at 1800. This weekend, the voltage never went up and I watched the voltmeter slowly drop to nothing. The alternator was a re-manufactured and maybe it was for a gas engine??? Long story cut short, I just want to know if I i can get a very low rpm rated alternator maybe with some higher amperage?

Assuming the alternator is good, chances are the voltage regulator is shot. BTW, voltage regualtor built into the PCM.

what you want to do is go by your local parts store and ask to be fitted up with a smaller diameter altn pulley.

this will increase shaft speed of altn.

I saw some alternators that have been rewound for 200 Amps on Ebay. Try calling a local shop in your area and see if they can beef yours up.

I used to have problems keeping my 3 batteries charged up and I first used an adjustable regulator made by Transpo but I dumped the 120 amp ND and replaced it with a Leece Neville 110-555HD alternator that is commonly used on OTR tractors.
The conversion was easier than you would expect, now it will put out 150amps all day long and will push 80 amps at an idle.
This alternator is self-regulating and self excites as soon as it turns.
Not sure how the alt. is set up on the later model but is should be doable.

There are companies that make alternators for police cars that have high output at idle speeds.

try the simple stuff first. Remove the battery cables and clean terminals and then make sure all the connections are tight. The old 12v's do not use that much juice. So check the battery connections
