96 12 valve shudder when accelerating

I've got a 96 2500 long box with an automatic, that has a pretty bad shudder when taking off from a stop at about half throttle. Transmission has also started to clunk very loudly when down shifting from any gear. Thinking its time for a rebuild or a new beefier tranny? Any input would be appreciated I'm new to the site and have only had my truck for about 4 months.

Mine did that too, I adjusted the bands (easy- done exactly like a honda ATV) and pulled the pan, threw in a new filter and its been glass smooth perfect since. $14 for the filter $7.99 for a gallon of cheap wall mart ATF. If you want a new trans with a good torque converter budget $3500.00 vs the $22.00

I've got the slightest play on the u-joint right at the front diff but nothing crazy. All the rest of them are tight

sounds like the bands, if they are not right they will cause a slow sluggish shift and cause the engine to rev, or if to tight they can cause the shudder due to them both being enguaged at the same time and the torque of the cummins will cause them the plates to chatter- dont delay, its super easy to adjust them when you swap in that new trans filter!

adjusted the bands on Friday truck is shifting much better the only time I have any problems now is when I take off from a dead stop. As long as I'm moving it shifts perfectly a lot better all around shift then before. When I'm at a dead stop it will shudder just a little bit now nothing serious.
