95/97 cummins?

ok i have a 95 2500 ram, but the motor seems to be a 97 or newer. it has a drop in canister fuel filter and a 97 owners manual, but its a 95 truck. any way that i can check the engine to know what year it is from? and are there are significant differences between the engines?

sorry to be such a newbie

Get the engine # and call cummins, they can tell you what year that motor was produced and probably the vin# of the vehicle it is supposed to be in.

or you can get the HP rating and that should help a little? on the metal tag on the drivers side of the gear cover.

i can see the metal tag but i can't read it, its in a rather dumb spot, i suppose that the engine number is also on it? my truck has the 5 speed manual, i thought the horsepower came at a lower rpm, just before 2 thousand it really seems to go, guess that's the torque kicking in?

where can the engine id number be found?

bentheir_05 03-03-2008 12:35 PM

on the same tag as the hp rating.

MikeR 03-03-2008 07:30 PM

Well, the tag tells everything you want to know about the motor; month/year it was built, the hp/tq rating, and serial#.
But the only problem is we're assuming the timing case was left on the '97 motor it came from. Or possibly, just the filter cannister and fuel tubes could have just been taken from a roasted '97 motor and installed on the '95.
Hard to say.

Also you could determine what P7100 inj pump you have by looking on the pump.

These are all 215 h.p pump Numbers:
Cummins# CPL# Bosch#
3931538 2175 0402736913
3929689 2023 0402736887
3931600 2175 0402736887
3931538 2175 0402736913
3931600 2175 0402736887

The last 3 digits of the Bosch PN# for a 215hp pump are 887 and 913, the 180hp numbers are 885 and 911, the smaller 160hp and 175hp pumps are the same model but range in numbers including 838, 841, 854 etc.

The last 3 numbers (top one is 913 for CPL 2175) are usually used as the inj pump pn. If you get the numbers off the inj pump you will know for sure what HP pump is in there.

Edit: Of course , injectors are another story. Are they 95 or 97? Not sure what casting numbers on block and how they can help.

The pump would be your best bet.

My question is, will any of those PPumps work ...or are they all interchangeable?

I have a 3931600 pump#, and wonder if the 913 or 887 or a 3931538 ppump will work ok too. Not really sure what difference there is in these pumps

I cleaned the tag on my '95 and stuck my digital camera down there, shined a flashlight on it and snapped a pic. Came out pretty good.
