53 Blocks
Is there any numbers or letters in the Vin code that will tell you if you are dealing with a 53 Block? Looking at 97-98's online and was wondering. Instead of driving 800 miles to find out.

You don't know until you crawl under to find out.
My 98 12v has a 53 block and I'm not worried about it. I've never heard of a 12v block cracking anyway, and I've been at this many years now.

Mike,
Just to make my brain understand 12V's 53 blocks don't crack like the 24V's? I don't know as much with the 12V since all my research goes to 24V stuff.

That's right, burner. I've never heard of a 12-valve 53 cracking and I've heard fairly reliable reports of some of these putting out in excess of 800 HP. I myself have a 98 12-valve w/ a 53 and I'm not worried about it. The only thing I'd do is take a look at the passenger side of the block and look for obvious porous casting. If the casting looks good it's going to be fine.
