The axle shift motor (a vacuum cannister) located on the front axle housing has two vacuum lines to it - one to engage and one to disengage 4wd. You may have inadvertently disconnected one of those lines.

Hey buddy - thanks for the reply. Checked both lines - they are both good. Just for trouble reasons, I pulled the electric wire off of the axle shift motor and the light goes out. It is definitely not in 4 wheel drive. Thinking the problem may be at the transfer case side.

Is is actually staying engaged in 4X4 or is just the light on? If it only the light then check the same wires you disconnected. The only signal for the 4X4 light is from that switch.
On my truck the wires going to that switch had started to rub together and my 4X4 light would flash on and off anytime I hit a big bump. I actually had to remove a section of the bad wires and replace them.

Sounds like the switch is bad. This is the switch at the axle. If you have the light when it is plugged in and you don't have the light when it is disconnected then it sounds like it it the switch.
