holding shaft from moving fixing 5th gear

I need to know if there is any way to hold the output shaft of my nv4500 4x4 from moving while tightening the updated fifth gear nut besides buying a "special" spline socket?

Either stuff a rag between the main and counter 5th gear teeth, or pop the shift tower and put it into 2 different gears, I think 1st and 3rd works well.
