4wd racing

dgarner:
I have a 1996 Dodge CTD that I drag race quite a bit. Yes, I leave my truck in 4WD High and it stays in 4WD High all the way down the track. I have been doing it like that for a long time and IMHO it is not going to hurt anything.
Here are some video links for you on my truck drag racing:

Generally, I creep up to the lights, hold the brake and light the first "PRE-STAGED" Light. At that point, I begin building boost up and when I am at the desired boost(on my truck that is 15-30lbs) I creep up a little more to light the "STAGED LIGHT" and then wait for the tree to begin the sequencing of the lower lights.
On the last yellow I let off the brake and FLOOR IT!
Hope this helps you.
BTW,.....if you don't have billet shafts in your auto tranny I DO NOT recommend exceeding 10lbs of boost during staging.

I forgot to tell you that the first video is video #1 and I am drag racing a pretty heavily modified 2001 Camaro SS that was running open headers against me! But,....he still lost!!!
That drag race was at our local drag strip "Coastal Plains Dragway" in Jacksonville, N.C.

I run my '93 the same as John, 20 ~ 30psig boost at the line, full pass in 4x4, etc.
After you've slowed to 70 or so, you can slip it back into 2wd before the turn-off.

John P, that first run was friggin' AMAZING! I had some trouble seeing the elapsed time. It looked like a high 11 second run... is that possible??
And are you shifting locked with that ATS trans?

Thanks for your kind words Robert! The time on that first run against that 2001 Chevy Camaro SS was 11.49@115.6 MPH.
Not too shabby for an old 96'Dodge CTD 12 valve that has not been lightened up at all. On that run, I even left my tailgate and spare tire on the truck!
And YES,....on all my drag race runs I am shifting "locked" with my ATS Transmission! I KNOW you remember way back when there were a few "naysayers" that told Clint and the ATS Crew that "locked shifting during drag racing would ruin the transmission." Well,....I have been doing it now for well over eight years with no problems whatsoever. On that run I had the "ATS Co-Pilot" set to lock at 20 MPH,.....pretty much right off the line.
And on that launch I left the line with 30lbs of boost because that driver in the Camaro said "he was going to whip my ***!" I wanted to make darn sure that didn't happen! Robert, all the noise you hear in that video is NOT me. It is the open headers on that Camaro SS!

thanks for the info i will have to try it in 4wd this pass weekend was my first time runing it at the track and all it would do is spin through 2nd and 3rd unless i was easy on it until i got up some speed! But before i take it back to the track i have to get me a clutch the stock clutch just cant hang! But with it spining and then the clutch slipping in when i was in fifth it ran a 16.4 at 89mph with just the mods in my sig, what would i have to do to be able to get it in the mid to low 13s?

Funny how some of the car drivers react when you make a pass. My first run ever was against a low 12's Kz1000 Kawasaki. I figured he was going to beat my by a mile and instead I never saw him after the first 60 ft. Fun as heck.

Yep John P, I remember those nay-sayers on that other diesel site well. And I remember all the painful squealing when they discovered that not only would the ATS shift locked year after year, but the ATS trannys were darn near bullet-proof too.
I've taught more than a few new Ford F-150's that the old green Dodge diesel running around town is not to be messed with at traffic lights... thanks to my ATS Stage IV.

I didn't see you had a manual tranny. Sorry about that.
To hit the 13's you are going to need a good clutch as you already said.
Then, some bigger injectors and possibly a larger turbo, some bigger delivery valves and more timing.
